Release Date: March 3
What We’re Saying: Girls Are Awesome has tamed up with adidas Originals once again, this time putting its own spin on not one, not two, but three versions of the Forum ’84. Together, the two brands are dropping an apparel and footwear collection comprising a range of dance-inspired pieces and one each of a Forum Low, Forum High, and a triple platform Forum “Platforum” Low.
Having taken inspiration from dance for this collection, Girls Are Awesome — who makes it a point to use real people in its campaigns — tapped CLASHcph co-founder Diana Whebi as the face of its campaign. Whebi is a professional street dancer who co-founded CLASHcph, a non-profit dance studio that aims to support community initiatives through dance.
“Diana is an absolute badass. We value Diana’s important work in elevating girls and breaking taboos by using dance as a platform to build an understanding of people’s different cultures and backgrounds,” says Girls Are Awesome brand director Søs Bondo. “Diana is a respectful and unapologetic role model who we love for her dedication to giving back to her community through dance.”
Speaking to Highsnobiety, Whebi explains how important it is that young people have a creative outlet and why dance became hers. “Streetdance has been a movement that I have found myself falling in love with since I can remember,” she says. “It became a gateway for me to find liberation in, to empower my voice and contribution as a citizen in the bigger society.”
“In a world that is getting more and more difficult to be and express yourself, art, and in this case street dance, is an outlet of free expression,” continues Whebi. “Many original street dance styles participate where young people representing minorities. They created a culture that globally became a phenomenon. A culture that builds self-awareness, creative thinking, conflict resolution and working for equality.”
