What We’re Saying: The New Balance 2002 was re-released last year to celebrate the silhouette’s 10th anniversary. It was originally launched as a premium running shoe, priced at $250, and was designed with luxury automobiles and watches in mind. When it first dropped in 2010, its price tag and premium construction were what stood out most and made it more of a statement sneaker. If you owned the 2002, you let everyone know that you had money to blow.
Last year’s re-release stays relatively true to the original, however, it swaps out the OG sole unit for one from the New Balance 860v2. The new tooling features exposed cushioning at the heel instead of across the whole sole unit (as was the case on the original) and gives the sneaker a more approachable feel.
The 2002R was one of New Balance’s most popular silhouettes in 2020 and was the subject of several collaborative efforts. Those included Salehe Bembury’s first New Balance collaboration, which was a furry, orange take on the model. A collaboration with BAPE is still set to be officially unveiled.
Additionally, New Balance will be dropping a slew of general release colorways, none more classic than the all-white and all-black versions Highsnobiety Shop is stocking from tomorrow onwards.
Both colorways are constructed predominantly of soft, premium leather, bringing what was once a performance shoe firmly into the lifestyle world. Check out both colorways of the New Balance 2002R above and pick up a pair at Highsnobiety Shop on March 31.
